Mission Statement
"The purpose of this museum shall be to enhance the education of all children and families who live in and visit Southeastern Connecticut by developing their awareness of the world around them through exploration in the arts, sciences, culture and history." Approved by the Board of Trustees, 5/12/94 (updated)

Value Statement
The Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut is more than a place of play. The Museum’s education value is as significant, if not more significant, than its recreational value. It is a safe environment designed for children, which respects their personal developmental needs. Within this environment children cultivate relationships with adults and peers, often as the controllers of activity. Here, children set their own pace and are allowed to develop social skills as leaders – even with adults. This fosters motor and language skills while introducing children to the world around them. In this informal non-school environment children recreate and learn skills that supplement their formal education. Hopefully they have some fun at the Children's Museum too, an often overlooked importance of physical and mental activity.

Volunteering

We can't say enough about all the wonderful people who help transform the lives of thousands of children each year by giving time and energy to the Children's Museum of Southeastern Connecticut. Our volunteers tell us that they get much more out of volunteering than they put in - so, something special must be happening here!

Whether your talents are in construction, computers, or working with children, we need your help! You can shine in the lives of children throughout the region by volunteering two hours or more a week, or month. Let us match your talents and interest with a meaningful task here at the Museum.

Inter-generational experiences are important for all of us, and we are seeking adults and teenagers for the following positions:

Audience Contact:
· Interpreters/Docents
· Program Teachers
· Audience Aides
· Special Event Aides

Non-Audience Contact:
· Bulk Mailings
· Clerical/Office Work
· Exhibit Construction
· Facilities Maintenance and Gardening
· Fundraising & Membership
· Research & Collections

Many times we can use your specialized talents in custom-tailored positions not listed here. Volunteers at this museum are treated like the professionals they are and will be fully trained by the Museum staff to ensure that everyone is comfortable with the tasks at hand.

The benefits of volunteering include opportunities for passes to the museum, a 15% discount in our Museum shop, an invitation to tour, annual volunteer appreciation night, and more. When you give of your time and expertise, you will also receive the heartfelt appreciation of many small persons as well. There's nothing more gratifying.
